I recently visited HunnyBunny Biscuit Co on Uptown 23rd in Oklahoma City for the first time. Here’s my review of the experience, what we ordered and what I liked and didn’t like!
When HunnyBunny Biscuit Co and Buttermilk Sliders opened up in Oklahoma City within months of each other, I assumed: Biscuit War. I secretly wanted them to fight against each other until the victor emerged. Like how there’s at least 7 poke places opening in the city this year. But sadly, I was wrong. Buttermilk and HunnyBunny are totally different, and like I always say: different biscuit, different vibe.
I recently visited HunnyBunny with my friend Marisa for a Saturday brunch. Since it was the first OU game of the season, the restaurant was busy, but not at all crowded. The shop, which is located on 23rd street, right in the middle of the action, a few steps down from the Tower Theatre, is bright and airy, with lots of pink, EVERYWHERE. I for one am a millennial, and I love a good pink. I felt at home.
You order at the counter, and Marisa and I had decided to get 4 biscuits and eat off all of them. We decided on the BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato, pepper jelly), the Cannonball (fried chicken, cheddar, sausage gravy topped with a fried egg), the Strawberry Shortcake Biscuit and the Cinnamon Roll Biscuit. She ordered a honey latte, and I ordered the Arnie Sparkler (shot of vodka, sparkling lemonade, tea). My total came to around $20 before tip. We sat down in the cute green booths and our order arrived very quickly.
First let’s talk about the biscuit. Honestly, I’ve had better. I’ve MADE better. But the biscuit isn’t really the star here. It’s the way that the owners of HunnyBunny have hacked the biscuit to make it delicious as possible. Take the Cannonball. Fried chicken, sausage gravy, cheddar and an egg? You really can’t mess that up, but you also can’t get it anywhere else in the city that’s fast-casual like HunnyBunny (I’ve had the same thing at Pearls and SunnySide, but those two meals are a commitment meaning time & money). The BLT was ok, meaning I inhaled it when it was sat in front of me.
Marisa’s latte was great. Not too sweet, and served beautifully. My drink was very tasty, but lackluster. I know we hate straws around here, but the clear straw wasn’t doing it any favors. Can we get a pink one ala Braums?
The sweet biscuits were on opposite ends of the spectrum for me. The Strawberry Shortcake Biscuit? Eh. It tasted like a Strawberries-Newport Imposter. I only had a few bites of that one. But the Cinnamon Roll Biscuit? Bury me with it. The cream cheese icing along with the soft, melty biscuit underneath was so good, I couldn’t stop eating it. Marisa and I shared it and we still couldn’t finish it!
Overall, I think HunnyBunny is a great addition to our city. It’s a sweet little biscuit shop in a convenient area that I will definitely be returning to. It was no fuss, delicious biscuits at a reasonable price. Count me in.
